MSc in Physics – SMIT

The Department of Physics at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), SMU, is dedicated to enhancing the understanding of physics for teaching and advanced research. The department has upgraded its laboratory and research facilities through funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the FIST program. It boasts a dedicated computer center with a high-end server and internet facility for postgraduate students, where they learn programming languages like C/C++, Graphics, and various software packages like Mathematica, PSPICE, and GEANT4.

The department initiated a full-time two-year MSc. (Physics) course approved by UGC in 1999. It takes pride in its team of experienced and dedicated faculty members specializing in particle physics, plasma physics, condensed matter physics, and electronics. Students can choose specializations in these areas in the second year of the program.

The department offers a PhD program in all the above specializations, providing a conducive research environment for young physicists. It also offers teaching assistantships to deserving candidates based on vacancies to pursue research in the department.

The Department consistently publishes research papers in journals and workshop/conference proceedings.

  5. Find scientific rationale for explaining inadequacies and limitations in experiments or systems for understanding fundamental physics.
  6. Develop a scientific temper and acquire the skill for designing new/innovative experiments for validating the laws of nature or pursuing new technological advancements.
