NEIFT, founded in 2007 by the esteemed fashion icon Vikram Rai Medhi, stands as a trailblazing institution in the realm of fashion education.

Driven by a vision to integrate cultural and geographical nuances of the North East Region into its curriculum, NEIFT's core team meticulously crafted modules and syllabi. Recognizing the pivotal role of handloom and handicraft in the social fabric of tribal and non-tribal societies, NEIFT swiftly gained prominence within the fashion industry. In a remarkable feat, the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, entrusted NEIFT with the organization and promotion of Handloom Week and Handicraft Week nationwide in 2009, a testament to its credibility and influence.

NEIFT's influence extends beyond academia; it has also pioneered initiatives like the Textile Introductory Events at the prestigious Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administrations (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, catering to professional IAS officers.

Furthermore, for the past 12 years, NEIFT has spearheaded the "Celebrating North East" Mega Festival in New Delhi, garnering active support from various government bodies including the Ministries of Textiles, Home Affairs, Tourism, Sports and Youth Affairs, MSME, as well as several North Eastern state governments and Central Government PSUs. Today, this festival has become a staple in Delhi's cultural calendar, symbolizing NEIFT's enduring commitment to showcasing the rich heritage and diversity of the North East.
